Perumbavoor: The Innovation Hub
Perumbavoor is the nerve centre of labour migration to Kerala from states beyond southern India. Being the hub of timber industry in Kerala, from the nineties onwards migrant workers from some of the most backward districts in the country have occupied a central role in Perumbavoor’s economy. It is estimated that about 150,000 migrants work in the Gram Panchayaths surrounding Perumbavoor Municipal Corporation. Nearly half of them work in the plywood and allied units. The rest work in the numerous mining units, hotels and restaurants, shops, construction sites and are also available to undertake any unskilled labour. CMID has identified Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district as our innovation hub.
